Why the Arctic
The arctic is a vast, remote, sparsely populated area yet rich with Indigenous communities, history and opportunity.
The predominant industry of the arctic is mining and resource extraction, and many communities are only accessible via fly-in services or treacherous and seasonal ice roads. The melting permafrost layer makes ground conditions even more challenging. As sea ice melts, there will be increasing numbers of commercial ships seeking passage through Northern waters. The area is also one of the most vulnerable to the impacts of human and environmental changes, which brings both increased opportunities and threats.
